Welcome to the new school year! My name is Mrs. McMahan and I will be your child’s first grade teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. I look forward to having your child in my classroom. Your child is going to have a wonderful time developing new talents, skills, and abilities. I am looking forward to meeting all of you in the near future.
We will have an exciting year as we practice and develop our reading skills – adding to our sight word vocabulary, learning to use decoding skills and increasing our comprehension, or understanding, of what we read. Our whole class reading will use the McGraw-Hill series, with individual guided reading. The Pearson Math series will be the basis for learning addition and subtraction facts, place value for tens and ones, measuring, telling time, and more. Social Studies is based on the series Reflections by Harcourt and will focus on learning more about the world including our community. In addition, we will learn about America and its symbols and traditions. The McGraw-Hill and Harcourt Science materials will help us explore the world around us – including plants, animals, the earth and weather.
In order to guarantee your child, and all of the students in my classroom, the excellent learning environment they deserve, I am utilizing the following DISCIPLINE PLAN. I believe that all my students can behave appropriately in my classroom, and I expect them to do so. In our classroom, students are taught to make the right decisions because it is the right thing to do. Students are taught to be in charge of their actions and they take pride in knowing they did the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do.
Your child will also be learning about character education. They will learn things like Honesty, Integrity, Fairness, and Responsibility. This will help them in making right choices and enable them to be proud of themselves for doing it.
Palla Bulldog students are taught PAWS.
P = Practice Self Control
A = Achieve Goals
W = Will be Respectful
S = Stay on Task
These behavior expectations will be used throughout the school, in the classroom, the front office, the playground, the hallway/walkways, the cafeteria, and the library and computer lab.
In anticipation of homework beginning in September, please be sure your child has the necessary supplies – pencil, crayons, scissors and glue, and a quiet place to complete his/her work. Homework will be sent home weekly. Nightly reading is a district-wide expectation.
As a parent, you are your child’s first teacher, and I value your input. I know you want your child to gain as much from his/her experience in my class as I do, and if you have questions - - PLEASE call or e-mail me. I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year.
