Hawaiian Day - "Lei off Drugs!"

What is Red Ribbon Week?
National Red Ribbon Week is celebrated October 23-31 each year. It is a time set aside by educators, law enforcement agencies and cities to promote children, families, and every member of the community in taking a stand against the use and abuse of drugs and narcotics.
The event was started in 1985 to mark the life of US Drug Enforcement Office, Enrique ‘Kiki’ Camarena. He was born in Mexicali, Mexico and graduated from high school in Calexico, CA. After he went to the Marine Corps for 2 years he became a Narcotics Investigator with the El Centro Police Department. He then worked 11 years with law enforcement, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), throughout California and Mexico trying to get rid of people who did not obey laws. Then a tragic event happened in 1985 when Kiki was close to solving a huge drug investigation. He was kidnapped, murdered, and tortured by the drug cartel and never seen again.

Ever since this innocent man put his life on the line to protect citizens from drug problems, people from everywhere celebrate Red Ribbon week in honor of everything Kiki did for us. The wearing of red ribbons was practiced to celebrate his memory, and this is how the event got its name “Red Ribbon Week”! We wear red to promote a drug free life! Drugs continue to plaque our country as they affect both children and adults. Families and friends also suffer the when a loved one is addicted to drugs. As a student, you can do your part by sending a positive message to your peers in your school and with your families at home.
Thank you Enrique Kiki Camarena!

Please help celebrate Red Ribbon Week with our fun themes. Let’s show everyone how being drug free truly is the only option in life! Make sure you wear your red ribbon each day as well as dress up for each theme.
Remember-it is your life and being drug free is a choice! Make smart choices because they last a lifetime!!!
